Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Massachusetts

Grand Larceny Steps

I filed a complaint at our local policy station for a theft (jewelry) in my home.

The jewelry was found at a pawn shop and is now at the police station. Approx $1500 retail value worth.

I'm wondering what is the progression of a theft case...the defendent would be arrested but then I don't know what happens after that and I'm wondering how and when I will get my jewelry back.

I checked with the police station and they said the case has been ''charged'' so I need to contact the district attorney's office.

Re: Grand Larceny Steps

The jewelry is evidence in the criminal case, so you will not get it back from the police until the case has been concluded. Regarding the progression of the case, the defendant would probably not be arrested (as you indicated), but rather they would more likely be summonsed to appear in court and answer the charge(s). Where and how the case proceeds after that depends on a number of factors. It is possible that a case such as this could be concluded fairly quickly, but it is also possible that it may take a number of months to finally resolve. In any event, one good thing is that your jewelry has been recovered, so you will get it back eventually.
