Law is like baseball- if the other side doesn't show up, you win. Default means that the defendant has failed to file an answer to the complaint within the time allowed by law so the plaintiff is entitled to proceed to judgment without having to prove the case. However, a judge can remove a default upon motion by the defendant if the defendant can provide a good reason for not responding to the complaint.
