Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Massachusetts

Jury Duty no show penalties

Can a person not showing up for jury duty be fined and held in comtempt of court or does he only have one of the penalties given to him? If he's held in contempt of court, how long does he stay locked up?

The judge has a range of options. I would suggest that the person offer dates to serve, and find a very good reason for now being there.

If you don't show up it is a default and a warrant will issue. You will have to pay a warrant recall and perhaps a fine. As to jail time, and without looking up the statute, it may depend how long the warrant has been outstanding, etc.

As the prior attorney stated you may want to have a very good excuse!

Good luck! Sincerely, Maria Murber
