Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Massachusetts

In Massachusetts someone left a summons for me on my mothers doorknob and mail but I already have moved to and living in Australia with my future wife. My mother already sent the summons back to the sheriffs office because I do not live at her address. I do not know who is trying to sue me. I am trying to find a lawyer but it is saturday morning here and nothing is open during normal "awake" hours. Nobody will call me back because I am in Australia. I know that I should talk to a lawyer, which I will in 4 days, but I can not sleep and some small peace of mind, honesty about what I may face, or what can possiblly happen would help.

Failing to defend or object to a lawsuit will likely result in a default judgment entering against you in the amount requested by the plaintiff. You have 20 days to respond to a complaint, once served. Without knowing more about the nature of the dispute, and the details concerning your residence, it is impossible to give a more detailed answer. You certainly have time to reach out to an attorney. Please feel free to contact our office at 617-357-4898 or e-mail us with more information. The only person who can represent you in court is a licensed attorney. The court will not allow your mother to appear in court on your behalf.

Mr Martel is somewhat correct hopefully an attorney representing you could remove the potential default by stating that you being out of the USA placed a stop on the ability to issue the default
