Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Massachusetts

I run a mens adult ice hockey league.

There are 4 teams and we played as a 5 on 5 league for 2 weeks. After those 2 weeks I decided to switch the league to a 3 on 3 league. I spoke with the players and everyone was ok with it. So we proceeded to play 2 more weeks as a 3 on 3 league without any problems.

After that 4th week, 2 teams decided to quit and demanded refunds claiming it "was not what they signed up for". No paperwork or anything was ever signed, only verbal agreements.

Am I obligated to return their money?
