It is very common that cases filed on the same date receive different fingerprint and interview appointment dates. Cases can be filed on the same day and one can progress faster than the other. Often times, even family cases filed together get separated and get different appointment dates. The basis of the adjustment of status also influences the amount of time USCIS will take to process the case. Every case is different. We would need more information about the type of case it is. If it has been longer than the amount of time USCIS indicated when you track the case with the receipt number, then you and your friend should consider submitting an inquiry with CIS.
