Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Massachusetts
Copyright Law
My son attended a wilderness
training camp (call it Cxmp X)this
summer, and had an excellent
experience. He has now written a
book, which he wants to call. One
young mans journey: My Camp X
experience.
Does he need specific written
permission to use the name of Camp
X in his book, since that is a
registered trademark of Camp X?

Re: Copyright Law
As a courtesy, he should seek the permission, especially as the experience was positive. The Camp will surely grant it. The camp's lawyers will of course want to see a copy of the book.
However, so long as he RECOGNIZES that Camp X is a registered trademark, both in writing as an acknowledgement, and with the approriate R-in-a-Circle symbol every time the name is used, he is not diluting or abusing the registered trademark, and I doubt that there would be much of a legal suit.
