Intellectual Property, Utility Patents

How does an ''amateur inventor'' protect his ''intellectual property'' while trying to determine if an idea for a mechanical device to generate electricity will actually work? Thank you

Re: Intellectual Property, Utility Patents

Provisional patent is a place-holder in anticipation of a later (within a year) filing of a full-blown patent application. However, don't make the common mistake of a do-it-yourself provisional application as the ultimate patent application cannot go beyond the scope of the provisional.
