Legal Question in Employment Law in Massachusetts

Do I have a right to collect from an out of country employment contract?

I was employed by a company whose main headquarters is in Canada. I had a employment contract from September 14, 2003 to September 14, 2004 to run their store here in Auburn, Massachusetts. They decided to close the store in May 2004 because the sales were down and now say they do not have to pay me because they are in Canada and the law does not apply to them. I cannot afford a lawyer as I have no money saved up. The contract was for $36,000 salary for 1 year. They are offering be only 2 weeks pay as settlement. Is this true that the contract is not valid in the U.S.?? Can I file for unemployment even though I am looking to get paid to the end of the contract?

Apply for unemployment immediately. If you are a qualified "employee" you are entitled to benefits. If you recover money you are required under the law to report it to DET if within period you are receiving benefits - benefits will be interrupted in a perioed equal to the manthly benefits you you were receiving taken out of amount of settlement. Division Employment and Training (DET) is very good at answerting you questions.
