Legal Question in Employment Law in Massachusetts

employment release and severance

My employer has asked I sign a 'Severance agreement and general release' form. I have 21 days from today. If I sign they will keep me on the payroll until July 31 with full benefits. Then the separation day of July 31 terms my employment and benefits. If I do not sign, I am not eligible to stay on payroll until that date. If I sign, then 'on or around July 31' I must sign a subsequent release in exchange for the 'enhanced serverance pay of 10 weeks. I do not have the subsequent release document. I want the 10 weeks severence without any contingencies at the end of my employment. Can I negotiate this? I will be turning 60 this calendar year.

Re: employment release and severance

The short answer is that you can TRY to negotiate anything. But, I would strongly advise that you have an attorney look at the language in the agreement and release before signing it.
