Use of information regarding clients of former employer

I am the wife of a former employee of a small financial company. He was let go after asking for a raise. He has a list of client names and addresses. Is is legal for him to have these and what can he legally do with them, i.e. sell them to another firm, give them a another firm, write his former clients a letter indicating that he was let go rather than leaving of his own accord? Thank you
