Legal Question in Employment Law in Massachusetts

Legal to force employees to take breaks?

I currently work in a restaurant where management (by way of the corporate office) forces every employee to take a 30 minute break every six hours. This is often inconvenient and, due to outdated computer tracking software, makes for some complicated and confusing situations adding to the inconvenience.

I know employees are *entitled* to breaks every so many hours, but is it legal to force an employee to take one? In the service industry it is often unreasonable and undesired. It's even more irritating when you don't want to have a meal (it's supposed to be a meal break) and you're forced to stay there for thirty minutes off the clock.

I would just like something to refer to next time the issue is brought up. Thank you.
