Legal Question in Employment Law in Massachusetts

Pushed into conversatons with supervisor

My supervisor often asks about what I take in school, and frequently hints that the company is really not willing long term, to let me leave half an hour early 2 days a week for class.go figure. keep me dumb and I wont leave this lousy retail position? They ask where the school is and the name specifically, because they are known to call up and check up on employees. Many employees at this large independant retailer are young college students with no sense of their rights, and willingly give this infomation. I think they are verbally bullying, even coercing information out of me, when I do not offer details in conversation. any opinion on this behavior?

Re: Pushed into conversatons with supervisor

As an at will employee, you are free to leave your employer at any time, for any reason. As such, your rights are very limited. There is nothing unlawful about not accomodating a student's school/class schedule. There is nothing unlawful about asking about where a student goes to school or following up on that information with the school itself. There is nothing unlawful about the conduct you decribe. Is it fair? Probably not. Is it a good way to conduct business? Probably not. But is it against the law? No.
