I recieved a layoff letter stating that I was laid off due to corporate realignment. can my employer then give negative references for things that were never discussed with me via review or performance warning?

If this is a Massachusetts matter then since 2010 there was a law that all negative documents to be placed in the personal file by provided to the employee and that the employee has the right to fill a response to the document. If you request a copy of the file within 3 years of your employment ending you have the right to this if you make it in writing.
