Legal Question in Employment Law in Massachusetts

Salary rights

I just quit my job at a small retail store. The establishment does not have an employee handbook and any policies that are- are verbal and nothing is written. Can my employer change me from salary to hourly without discussing it with me? I had taken time off last week due to deaths in the family and came back to a paycheck for 1 day of work. Is there anything i can do about this? I guess i just assumed is was illegal to change my pay and I would have had the days off without a problem. Due to me being salary my hours are not recorded anywhere. Do salaried employees have any specific rights within the law if there are no written policies within a company? Thanks for your time.

Re: Salary rights

Generally, you are an at-will employee with no recourse unless you are union or have a written contract of employment for a certain no.of months or years. Question regarding changing from salary to hourly should be raised with the Wage and Hour Administration at the Attorney General's ioffice. If you quit, you may still be entitled to unemploymwent because your salary was substantially reduced.
