Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Massachusetts
break lease illegal apartment
I need to break a lease that I signed for for a year. I found out the basement apartment is illegal.
Can I break the lease because of this with no consequences?

Re: break lease illegal apartment
Whether you can break your lease and whether you have an potential claims against your landlord is incredibly fact specific (as one example, you do not specify whether you live in the illegal basement apartment or how you know it to be illegal). You should speak with an attorney.

You should retain an attorney to review your lease an be absolutely sure the apartment is illegal. Good luck!
