Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Massachusetts

no heat in my appartment

My landlord came over to my appartment and lite the pilot of my oven and gas heating system. Both went out he told me to just keep relighting them with a bic lighter. That is not my responsiblity? right? I don't feel safe at all. They just bought the property and I feel they didn't do the necessary inspcetions before renting it to me. If I had known this before I rented I would not have. HELP

The pilots should be clean and operable. Ask in writing that it be repaired or replaced. Keep the tone very polite. If this gets no results, you have the right to "repair and deduct." However, the statute on that is VERY specific, and you should know what it requires before taking that step.
