Assuming you have no lease or are a month to month tenant, you need to give your landlord 30 days notice of termination of the lease.

Jonathan is right. If there is a lease, then your termination date has already been agreed upon.

Just to add to his instructions for month-to-month or tenancy-at-will situations, you are required to give 30 days notice AND the tenancy must end at the end/commencement of a term.

For example, a month-to-month tenancy commencing on the 1st of every month cannot be terminated on October 15.
