Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Massachusetts

Lease Question

I signed a 12 month lease that expires December 31. I will be relocating this summer (June or July) due to a job that will move me out of the state. I have heard some states have exceptions that permit this as a legal reason for breaking the lease, without penalty to the tenant. Is Massachusetts one of those states, or am I stuck at my landlord's mercy for whether or not I will be charged a fee for breaking the lease? What happens if I refuse to pay any such fee?

Re: Lease Question

One option is to retain an attorney to review the lease and attempt to negotiate a favorable early termination that affords the landlord an opportunity to relet without loss of revenue. This will be harder if you knew you would be relocating in July when you signed in January. Good Luck!
