Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Massachusetts

Lease/Illegal Apartment

I am posing this questions differently from the first. I want to get out of my lease. I want to get out of my lease and found out the apartment is illegal. One of the Lawyers on this network said that I can and to retain a lawyer. I did retain a lawyer and he is telling me because I signed the contract even though the apartment is illegal it is a contract and I cannot break the lease. Can you tell me if this is true? Thank you,

Re: Lease/Illegal Apartment

I am located in the South End neighborhood of Boston and live in Dorchester.

If the apartment is truly illegal, but you do not have any evidence, you should contact the Inspectional Services Department of the City of Boston and have them inspect the premises.

If the apartment has already been deemed to be illegal, then you should carefully break your lease with the help of an attorney.
