Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Massachusetts
do i have to pay for damages
i was wondering if a landlord rents an apartment and does not ask for a deposit does that mean that they can still make you pay for damages? i rented an apartment and when i got the apartment the walls had a few holes, there was no glass in the mirror, the towel rack was falling off and the landlord told me i could have pets. no she is claiming that i made the damages to the apartment when i did not make them. at first i only had one cat and then when i wanted to get two more cats my landlord told me that would be fine as long as i sprayed down the apartment with flea killer so the other neighbors wouldn't end up with fleas in their apartments. no my cats never had fleas she wanted me to do that as a jst in case thing. i offered to pay her a cleaning deposit. i offered her a pet deposit and she turned me down. when i went to move out she mailedme a bill for damages that i did not do and then said my old apartment had a cat smell to it. i left the place cleaner then it was when i moved in. can she bring me to court for things i did not do???... i thought that if the landlord did not ask for a deposit then if there is damages it does not fall on the past tenant to pay additional funds to the landlord.

Tenants are responsible for damages whether there is a security agreement or not. At the time you rented, there should have been an inspection report signed by you and the landlord.
Good Luck.
