Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Massachusetts

it came with me

Recently the owner occupied home in which we've been renting for 12 years was sold and the new owners offered us a new lease at almost double the rent-- we declined-and are closing on a house this weekend.

These past two summers i have spent the majority of my spare time putting in an extensive rock garden-all the work and expense has been my own and some plants and the more impressive stones came with me from my last apartment-and others have been grown from cuttings that go back to my great grandmother, or been given to me as gifts

When she saw me removing a few plants and special pots she insisted that everything in the garden -including what arrived with me- is no longer my personal property but hers.

I had no idea of this as my previous landlords said nothing to this effect and our rental agreement here does not mention it in any way.

If someone can tell me where I stand I'd be greatly appreciative

Thank you L.R.C.

Generally, when you make improvements to property, the improvements belong to the owner of the property. You might have a right to be compensated for the improvements, in all fairness, however. Tell the new owner how much it cost you and see if you can negotiate some sort of settlement on your own. If not, and it's a lot of money in question (say, $1,000 or more) contact a lawyer for help. Good luck!
