rent after lease expires

I entered into a lease in March of 2004 and the length was for 3 years After the lease expired I remained as a tenent at will in September and with a down turn in business I was unable to pay rent so I notifyed my land lord that I was leaving I left in March of 2008 my question is am I required to pay back rent after the lease expires

Assuming that your current tenancy is truly a month-to-month tenancy at will (which it sounds to be), then you are only required to provide at least 30 days of notice.

Once you have provided appropriate notice of your intention to terminate the tenancy, and your tenancy has in fact terminated, you are not longer responsible for further rent.

You are, however, responsible for paying rent for any months during which you lived in the apartment.
