Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Massachusetts
Small Claims Case
My best friend's mother owned a house with a vacant 3rd floor apartment. She told me that her daughter and I could share the apartment so I moved in August 2007.
All appliances and 2/3 of the furniture is mine and is still in the apartment. After January rent was paid, I decided that I was going to move out because my roommate moved her boyfriend in with us and he didn't have a job and would have random people in our house at all hours of the night. Also, her mother decided she was going to raise the rent and wrote me a letter stating that if I couldn't afford it, then I should terminate the premises.
Now' she's taking me to court for non-payment of rent from Nov.2007 to May 2008. I moved out in April and I never had a lease and paid my rent in cash and she never produced any receipts like she said she would. I have pictures of the broken windows and clogged sink that she promised to fix before we moved in and never did and the letter that she requested I vacate the premises as well.

Re: Small Claims Case
Retain an attorney to defend you in the claim brought against you and perhaps counterclaim against the landlord.
