Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Massachusetts

What are my next steps?

My roommates convinced the

landowner to let them get a cat

despite the fact that I had requested

to live in a cat free home before I

even signed the lease. I had told

them if they got a cat I would have

to move out, so when they brought it

home that night (the same day they

told me they were getting one) I

started packing. I could not get the

landlords # and had decided to send

a letter, there were other issues with

the apt as well-the washer and dryer

had not been working for 3 months

despite numerous calls, I had to fight

to get the property management to

pay the buildings water bill after shut

off notices had been posted outside,

and we have received notices for

court dates from the ISD for unsafe

conditions....I was told by one lawyer

to just walk away from it because the

landlord has enough to deal with, but

I feel like I still should do something

so I'm not responsible for the

remainder of my part of the lease.

How should I go about informing the

landlord that I have moved out and

do not intend to pay for an apt I can

no longer live in?

Re: What are my next steps?

If the cat was your sole reason for moving out, your problem would be with your room-mates. Fortunately, you seem to have more than enough cause to declare that the landlord violated your right to a habitable apartment, etc. You could send him a letter regarding the safety and water issues to cover yourself if you are uncomfortable. Send it certified, return receipt requested.
