Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Massachusetts
Can she be sued
My daughter left an apartment, gave a months notice. We cleaned it out to the best of our ability. The owner, who was a friend, told us that she would take care of everything else because she knew that it needed updateing. The apartment had alot of wear and tear on it, not just from my daughter but from other tentants. There was no security deposit, no lease, no first or last months rent. We had been willing to continue to help with the clean up until the owner got very demanding with the time we had because of work. The letter we recieved did not come from a lawyer. The owner typed it up herself. Please let me know what we need to do. Thank you. Susan

Re: Can she be sued
I can not respond to your question as I do not know the contents of the lease or the contents of the letter the landlord sent. I also don't know how much money is in dispute. Often, the cost to review all the problems and research the legal issues can be as much as the amount demanded. Perhaps you need to sit down with the landlord to work out a solution. Otherwise, you may need to hire an attorney to carefully examine all facts and advise you as to your legal rights.

What does the letter say?
Re: Can she be sued
I would be happy to look the lease, your landlord's letter, and other documents and provide you my best opinion (and hopefully prevent a legal dispute).
I am also happy to be of assistance in the event your landlord attempts to take some sort of legal action.
