Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Massachusetts

Termination of Lease

There was a fire of the rooftop of my bulding. We had to evacuate the building. It is now a week later and the landlords have terminated our leases and told us that we would not be able to move back in. My apartment is in pretty good condition and so is the one below me. Can they make us leave?

Re: Termination of Lease

I would have to read the lease, but yes they can terminate the lease, but you may be entitled to compensation for moving. Smoke damage to your own property and cost of relocation. Clearly return of security deposit etc.

I would take my lease to a local attorney for reiew and advice.

Good Luck

Re: Termination of Lease

I am so sorry to hear about the destruction to your home, and glad to hear that you and your property were largely unharmed.

I am located in Quincy, and would be happy to review your lease, and negotiate a return of your security deposit, damage to property, and some amount for resettlement into a new apartment, if possible.
