Legal Question in Legal Ethics in Massachusetts

Access email of public officials

It is believed the Town Manager may be involved in some unethical dealings with special interest groups. Can the public request a copy of his emails? Can the public request emails of persons the Town Manager was in email correspondence with (non-town affiliated persons)? Is there a limit to how far back I can request emails (one year? length of project in question?) Should an attorney be hired to request the emails? Is there a Mass. Statute I must follow? Thanks in advance...JD

Access to e-mail is a delicate subject; you should consider retaining an experienced attorney and narrowing the focus of you r inquiry. It is unlikely you will gain blanket access to this information.
