Legal Question in Mediation in Massachusetts

getting money back from former boyfriend

In a past relationship, I lent the man I was seeing a large sum of money. Now, I really need it back. I have a photocopy of a notorized statment saying that he'd pay be back by a certain date, one which is within the next six days.

I highly doubt he is going to, and I was wondering what course of action I should take. I don't know if I can afford a lawyer, but it is a great sum of money. (close to $7000)

Unfortunately it won't be easy. The money amount in your case would probably not interest an attorney who takes 1/3 of your recovery. You can go to the District Court and see if a clerk would help you file a complaint. If you know if your debtor owns a house or where he banks, there are procedures to attach either. If you are successful, you will get interest on the judgment at 12% from the date you make demand for payment. So be sure to send a letter making the demand by certified mail. GFood luck.

You could also call the bar associations to see if you qualify for free or reduced fee services from a lawyer. The Massachusetts Bar Referral System is a good place to start/.
