Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Massachusetts

Breaking a lease

I am being pursued to pay a $1500.00 fee for breaking a lease. It is true that I did not fullfill my obligation of 12 months, however the day I signed the lease the property manager told myself and my mother who was with me that as long as I fullfilled at least 6 month of the lease there would be no problem with leaving if I had to. I gave my notice in writing and the leasing office made no attempt to tell me that they would charge the fee. I asked if everything was all set and they said yes. I turned in my keys and about 6 weeks later expecting my key deposit back I received a bill for $1500.00. I replied with a letter with the content as stated above. I got no reply until this Saturday the 5th of February, demanding the money. I do agree that I signed the lease - am I stupid for taking the managers verbal word that after 6 months I could leave? Please let me know if I shpuld continue to fight?
