Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Massachusetts
My daughter and her boyfriend just purchased a home. ( one side of a two unit condo ) They have found out that there is only one water meter ( for both units ). My daughter gets the water bill sent to her side of the condo because that's the side were the water meter is. The owner of the other unit is selling his side of the condo. My daughter would like the new owners to install a seperate water meter for their side of the condo. Who should she go about doing this before the ( present ) owner sells it.

Your daughter can't do this alone. She needs the other owner to agree. This is because the water meter is controlled by the condominium and not the individual. In addition, there is probably water for the common areas like the basement and outside. This means that she ,may need to install two other meters and not one. The next issue is the pipes on the inside. Are the pipes structured in such a way that they can install three meters without changing the pipes? If the condo votes to install the new meters, they should be able to do this by hiring a plumber. Just make sure she knows the cost before she starts.
