division of lot

We own a piece of land which was originally sold as four individual lots. There is a house sitting on one lot. It is a cottage neighborhood and most of the houses are on one lot. Is it possible to divide this piece of land into 2 lots? We were told by the town building inspector that we couldn't but we didn't know whether we should pursue this further. Thank you

Without reading your deed and reviewing the current zoning ordinance, it would be impossible to determine what your rights are.

However, based on your description I would pursue the matter. I do not necessarily agree with the Town Building Inspector, who is not the zoning adminisatrator.
