Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Massachusetts

find attorney of record

How do I find out which attorney is handling an estate after the owner is deceased. I need to contact in regard to buying their land. The property has been unused and is getting out of shape. The taxes are up to date. I dropped a note of intent into the mailbox and got no reply.

The name of the attorney, if there is one, should be on the case file at the Registry of Probate in Worcester. You can look up the case name on the computer at the registry, then request a copy of the file. The attorney's name should be either on the file jacket inside or on the back of the Petition for Probate or other filings.

Re: find attorney of record

go to the probate court for the County in which the property is located and see if an estate has been opened. If it has it will list the name of the attorney and/or the executor for the estate.

Also, you can check with the Treasurer's office and find out where the tax bills are mailed and mail a letter to that person and address.

Good luck.
