Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Massachusetts
My friend, who is getting on in her years, sued a former tenant of her Virginia rental property and won a $30K settlement for damages done to the home. The former tenant has moved back to Massachusetts, where they were originally from. Once we get the abstract from the Virginia Clerk of Court, how do we proceed to place a lean against the former tenant's real property? Will it require hiring an attorney in Mass.? I'm posting to "Real Estate & Property". Should I be posting in "General Civil Litigation"?

I would suggest you hire an attorney who will sue on the judgment (I assume it is a judgment not a settlement) and seek a writ of attachment on the former Tenant's real estate and other assets.
You need a certified copy of the Judgment for the attorney in Massachusetts.

You should retain counsel here in Massachusetts to domesticate the judgment here in Massachusetts and take further collection activity against the tenants. If you are not living here in Massachusetts, you most likely will need to retain counsel to represent you. Many firms, including ours, will take a matter like this on a contingency basis.
