The homestead act protects the primary residence of a homeowner against the forced sale of his or her home to satisfy a levy. All homeowners are protected up to a certain dollar amount from certain types of debts, but for additional protections homeowners should prepare and file a homestead declaration. The homestead protections will not prevent liens from being recorded against a property, but they may prevent a property from being sold at auction by a sheriff in satisfaction of the lien.
