Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Massachusetts

Partnership track

What does it mean for an associate to be on the partnership track? How long does the process take? If an associate feels they are not on track to make partner, do they usually make a move to another firm in hopes of making partner there?

Re: Partnership track

Depending upon the profession and the firm it has different meanings. In law, it means you are being considered for a future partnersip in your law firm. The length of time can be as short as 5 years and as long as 10 years, it depends on the firm, your productivity, your ability to generate and keep clients.

Other professions have different standards, time tables and requirements.

If someone does not make partner, they frequently leave the firm but it is not necessarily required. Some people prefer to be associates and avoid the obligations of partner. Some lawyers become of counsel to the firm and are not associates or partners but maintain a relationship with the firm.

You should discuss this with the firm in question, what are the criteria to make partner, how long does it generally take and if they decide they do not want you to become a partner do they ask you to leave.

You might want to consult an employment specialist for advice on how to deal with this with respect to the firm and the profession you are engaging.

Good Luck.

Re: Partnership track

This question is better suited for an employment services specialist or recruiter. Attorneys may or may not desire to become partners in a firm and may or may not be offered the opportunity to do so.
