Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Massachusetts

i am putting my house on the market and my mother lives in an in-law apartment attached to the home. My husband and I are the two people on the title. Does my mother have any legal recourse if we sell the house? She did pay a majority portion to build the inlaw apartment, however.

Your mother may claim that she has an equitable interest in the property, or that she is entitled to any increase in fair market value that might be attributed to the improvements that she paid for. You may want to sit down with an attorney and figure this out with her prior to putting the house on the market. If buyers or the bank smell a conflict, it will make your lives much more difficult, and could harm your bottom line.
