Re: rental house being sold

That depends on whether you have a written lease with your landlord. If you do, then the written lease determines the rights and responsibilities of the parties.

If you do not have a written lease, you are probably in a month-to-month tenancy at will. If that is the case, then you can be evicted after being provided 30 days notice to quit. You have to move, or you risk being forcibly evicted by the court.

If you have a lease, the lease controls as to your rights and responsibilities. If you do not have a lease or a month to month renter, you need to move or the Landlord can begin summary process proceedings to evict you.

Without special issues such as being over 65, disabled or having young children in school, you will only be delaying the inevitable and it will cost you money as well.

If you cannot negotiate a written agreement with your landlord to allow you to stay a reasonble time to find another place, you should consult an attorney to determine whether your landlord has given proper notice or perhaps has violated your rights as a tenant, which may assist in negotiating additional time.
