retaining counsel
i may need a lawyer if i have found one but there is still the possibility i may never use him should i put down a retainer how much is it usually is it refundable

The retainer to the extent that it is not used must be returned on your request.

Employing lawyers as with most professional employment, is negotiable. Discuss all terms of employment ahead of hiring, and get them in writing.

Retainers are required to be refundable to the extent they are not used for fees earned or disbursements made on your behalf. You should determine if initial meeting is free or you will be charged for same if retained.
There is no usual retainer, it depends on what they are doing for you.
