Sold house to real estate co.,how do i find out if morgages were paid?

my husband sold his house to a real estate co. whom is no longer in business.this was 5 years ago.this week we got a phone call ,telling him the second morgage was'nt paid. the co. he sold to,was supposed to pay the 1'st +2nd morgage.he signed;they signed this agreement+ it was notorized. how do we prove it was /was'nt paid;or what does he need to do?is he liable to still pay ?
