Massachusetts has a proceddure for Voluntary administration of small estates with assets under $15,000 (excluding an automobile). But if the assets exdceed that you must file a petition for full Administration.

For small estates under $15,000 (not including an automobile) in probate property, voluntary administration is allowed. You should go to the Probate Court for the county where the deceased person resided at time of death. They will be able to provide you with necessary forms.
