Social Security disability debt

Through unusual circumstances I owe Social Security $20,000. If I enter a same sex marriage is my partner in any way resonsible for paying this debt?

Re: Social Security disability debt

The answer to your question may depend on a number of variables, including the type of social security benefit involved.

Generally speaking, the Social Security Administration does not recognize the validity of same-sex marriages in Massachusetts. However, careful attention should be given to joint assets or assets used to purchase joint property, like a home.

With the laws of the various states changing rapidly with respect to same-sex marriage, you may want to sit down with an attorney to review the ramifications of entering into same-sex marriage in Massachusetts (i.e, federal benefits, taxes, property ownership, estate planning and inheritence, divorce, etc.).

Please feel free to contact my office if you would like to come in and discuss.
