Legal Question in Tax Law in Massachusetts

Bank Levy State of Massachusetts

I checked my bank account and $4,000 was taken out for a legal order. I had no idea what it could be. My bank says that the order came from the Massachusetts Department of Revenue. I'm waiting to find out what is going on from the DOR. It's possible that these are unfiled taxes from my college days - but the amount of 4K is way too much (I had a very low income). I received no notice of this, no paperwork. If the state of MA has already taken my money, can I still file an amended tax return and get some of it back? By the way, I haven't lived in Massachusetts for 8 years. Also, how do I know that the deduction is one time only?

Re: Bank Levy State of Massachusetts

You should have been sent a notice of levy by the MDOR. I would contact them and find out what the levy is based upon.

Until you know what the levy is for, years, etc. then you can take appropriate action.

It may not be the last levy, that is why you need to know what it is for and make sure they have the correct person. Mistakes do happen.

Also, are you divorced and pay alimony or child support? if so, that could be related to the order.

Once you know what the levy is actually for then you should resubmit your question or you can contact me.
