Legal Question in Tax Law in Massachusetts

I am going through a divorce and I just found out that for the past 6 years my husband forged my name on his IRS tax income tax forms and filed married filing jointly against my wishes. I am on SSI and was not required to file at all, but I did not want to file with him because we were separated and his had been convicted of tax fraud in the past. Also, he did not report my SSI income on the income tax forms. Is it illegal for a husband to forge his wife's name on an income tax return? and is it illegal to fail to report her SSI income? I cannot afford a lawyer and he has been bullying me our entire marriage. He says he had every right to do what he did because we are married.

First your husband has no right to sign your name to a tax return. If he signed your name, you have no liability for what he has done under the innocent spouse rule.

you can contact several legal services for referral for assistance. One would be the volunteer attorneys at most probate courts for divorce matters, others are Boston Legal Services or contact the Massachusetts Bar Association for assistance.
