Legal Question in Tax Law in Massachusetts
How can I find an Attorney that would help me recover money paid to another law firm that lied to me about reducing I.R.S. dept. and help me getting my plumbers license reinstated? They basically charged me over $5000.00 to file 8 years of delinquent tax returns, with the promise they could reduce interest & penalties based on some years were over paid and others owing. After paying them and being led on for years, I ended up having to pay the I.R.S. the full amount owed, and was told by an agent in charge NOBODY could get a reduction, and anything the lawyers did , I could have done myself! After paying the I.R.S. I spoke to one of the lawyers and informed him of this, and told him I no longer needed them, as they did nothing but over charge me for basic tax returns. Yet, now 3 1/2 years later, I am still getting bills from them stating they are continuing to do work? on my behalf.
1 Answer from Attorneys
Without knowing more about who these attorneys are and where they are located, it is difficult to advise you how to proceed. You can contact the Mass Bar Association for a referral or the Boston Bar Association. The first question I have is where are these attorneys located. In the past, there have been some scam attorneys from FL that have done precisely what you describe.
My firm will not allow me to sue other attorneys, but if you call me I may be able to refer you to someone who does file malpractice and other claims against attorneys. One of the problems you have is that legal malpractice in MA has a 3-year statute of limitations. A breach of contract action has a 6-year statute of limitations. So the first question is when did you terminate them and when did you become aware of the fraud and malpractice.
