Legal Question in Tax Law in Massachusetts
I have two home in different states ( Mass and Florida ) . In addition I am out of the country for just over 6 months a year. How many of the remaining 6 months of the year do I need to stay in Florida to claim it as my primary home to avoid paying mass state income taxes. Or do I have to pay Massachusetts only for the months that I stay there?

The answer is more complex than can be adequately answered here. While time spent has something to do with residency for tax purposes, there are other issues such as where your office is, where have a driver's license and a number of other things as well.
If you like you can contact me and I will explain the basic requirements to cease being resident in MA, but remember, MA does tax non-residents on income earned in MA.
Talk to a CPA about part-year resident tax returns and the criteria. The biggest hurdle is if the payor of your income is a MA entity; Mr. Roth is correct that this is rather a complex area and you need advice specific to your circumstances.
