Legal Question in Tax Law in Massachusetts
HI, I owe back taxes for Federal and State taxes. If I get married and have a joint checking account can they put a lien on it or should I keep her pay which is direct deposited in a separate account in her name onbly?

Yes, the tax authorities can levy any account with your name and SSN on it. A safer approach would be to keep spousal funds separate, or maybe even have your direct deposits go into the spouse's account. It would also be advisable to settle the balances. If you are unable to work out a direct payment plan with the IRS/MDOR, a bankruptcy proceeding may enable you to discharge some older tax debts and all penalties, while having a court-approved repayment plan for what cannot be discharged.
