Traffic Violation / Motor Vehicle Accident
After swerving to avoid another vehicle, I struck a telephone pole last October and was injured. The other driver never stopped. My parents called the insurance company (policy is in my mother's name) to report it. However, they were informed that the policy had been canceled the previous month. Apparently, there was a problem with our online automatic payments and we never noticed it.

A week after the accident, I received a traffic violation citation in the mail for a ''lane violation'' with the words ''ACCIDENT YES''. I mailed the ticket back to request a hearing and recently got a new letter with my hearing date. Contrary to the initial citation, this letter states ''ACCIDENT: NO''.

Also of note: The letter provides an ''OFF ID'' but also says ''OFF: NOT ON FILE''

Should I attend the hearing to appeal my traffic violation or count my blessings and pay the citation? More specifically, is it still possible to get into trouble for unknowingly being uninsured at the time of the accident?

I always think you should appeal a ticket, but it depends on the circumstances and court.

You should consult with an attorney who regularly practices in that area.
