Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Massachusetts

My dad passed away, left a will and i am the executer. He has a bank account in Mass. I've been told that I need to file for probate in the state of MASS because the state requires probate on $ amounts of $15K and above. Is that accurate? and if so, how do i start the process?

Yes, you can download the forms for an informal probate from the Probate Court website for Massachusetts Probate Courts. I assume your father did not reside in MA, so I would file in the county where the branch of the Bank is located.

your problem is that unless someone is a co-owner or a beneficiary in the account, you need to file.

If your father lived in another state, you should probate the estate in the state of residence and not Massachusetts.
