What exactly does an executive of an estate do? Why do they get appointed?

It is an Executor or Executrix. This is the person responsible for making sure all assets are obtained and accounted for, claims are paid, and the balance of the estate is disbursed according to the deceased's Will or if no valid Will, by statute.
